It is the finest Stone Age site in East Africa, that was once a shallow Lake and now a dried up River bed together with bones of two extinct animal species were found here believed to date back 60,000 years.

Boma is a Swahili word for fortification, perfectly describing the Centre as a stronghold of culture and heritage in the Region. The Boma in one of the oldest remaining buildings in Iringa, constructed around 1900 by the German colonial regime to serve as a military hospital.
The place of great Chief Mkwawa of Wahehe, who resisted colonial agreement and fought against Germany troops and conquered sparing no life of the enemy including their commander Von Zelewisk. This great victory happened at Lugalo along Dar-es-Salaam road 18kms from M.R. Hotel.
At Kalenga you will find the skull of this hero who committed suicide to retain his dignity for his tribe. Also you will find lots of tools, weapons, raw materials used to fabricate iron tools and guns captured from Germans.
This graveyard contains 131 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and one from the Second World War. There are also 16 German war burials within the cemetery. Twelve burials were made in Iringa Cemetery from May 1916, to December 1917, and after the Armistice 135 graves were brought in from other burial grounds.
Gangilonga, means 'talking stone' in Hehe which comes from the stories of ancestors voices coming from the rock. This is where the Hehe Chief (Mkwawa) met with his tribesmen to mediate on how to fight the Germans.

Located 5kms from M.R. Hotel, The paintings are from the Iron Age and were made by Bantu people. Numerous stone tools used by Bantu people were recovered from the site, other things recovered from the site includes pottery shards and bones.
